Truckers spend a lot of time away from home, which can be difficult all year long, but especially around the holidays. It’s such a busy time of the year for you and your role of delivering goods is essential during the holiday season, but here are some things you can do to celebrate the holidays even while you’re on the road.
- Decorate your truck
Spread holiday cheer wherever you go by decorating your truck! You can deck out the interior of your cab with lights or LED light strips, holiday-themed seat covers, garland, a small dash display, a small Christmas tree or an Elf on the Shelf in your passenger seat. Don’t forget some cozy items for your bunk, like a holiday-themed blanket or pillow. On the exterior of your truck, you can put a wreath, lights, or other decorations on the grill, lights anywhere around the exterior where you can secure them safely, festive mud flaps, reindeer antlers and nose on the front of your truck or a Christmas decal on the side or back of your truck.
- Stay connected through technology
Technology has been so helpful for truck drivers to stay in touch with their loved ones while they’re on the road. Set aside time to video chat with friends and family throughout the season and during holiday celebrations, send and receive photos and texts, and have your loved ones send you videos of special moments happening at home. It’s an easy way to feel like you’re experiencing the moments with everyone even though you’re separated by distance.
- Enjoy a holiday dinner
Even though you’re on the road, you can still enjoy a good holiday dinner. A lot of chain restaurants and truck stop diners will serve holiday dinners this time of year. Some of them will even be open on Christmas Day. Keep your eyes open for advertisements and plan ahead so you know which locations will be open and whether you need to make a reservation ahead of time.
- Celebrate on your own schedule
Holidays may fall on specific dates, but that doesn’t mean they can only be celebrated on those days. If you’re going to be on the road for Christmas or New Year’s Eve, find a day during your home time to get together with friends and family to celebrate.
- Share the season with other drivers
One thing we love about trucking is the camaraderie with other drivers. Your career is unique in that there’s not a lot of other people who understand what life on the road is like. Connect with other drivers who are on the road for the holidays. If your routes align, make plans to grab meals together. Wish each other a happy holidays and help each other to feel a little less lonely this time of year.
